We all get busy in the everyday minutiae of business life. Paying the bills, trouble-shooting issues, chasing debtors, cleaning the coffee machine…. You name it, as a small business Director, it’s easy to get stuck in the weeds. But have you ever considered that you might be comfortable in the weeds? That getting off the ground to see the business from a higher perspective is something you might be actively avoiding?
I’m not judging. I have been there. The question is why do we do it? In most cases, in my experience, the answer is fear. Specifically, fear of taking steps towards the next big goal. Are you a procrastinator? That’s fear. Fear of getting it wrong, being judged, wasting time and money, looking stupid. It is much less scary to get busy – really busy – with the small stuff, avoiding the big, game-changing stuff, and staying in the safety of the weeds.
So, how do you overcome this cycle of avoidance? The answer is in gaining clarity. I spoke last month about the importance of being guided by your North Star. Equally important is gaining a clear understanding of the pain points in your business:
- What are the tasks which consistently get dropped down the to-do list?
- Are there consistent themes in your client feedback?
- Does your team raise the same issues meeting after meeting?
- What are the troubles which keep you awake at night?
- Are you tempted by so many shiny baubles (exciting projects, growth avenues, dreams and options) that you get analysis paralysis and end up choosing none?
Here’s what I know for sure: Resisting the pain prolongs the pain. Simply getting busy doing the do will not solve your issues. You need to get comfortable with the discomfort and dig deep to understand what’s below the surface of your fear and procrastination.
You don’t have to do it alone; We have developed a diagnosis process to help you understand the issues that are holding you back and keeping you stuck in the weeds. Reach out today to book a diagnostic consult and ditch the fear.
